Golf Clubs For Ladies by Elaine Clarke

Before you go to the 1st tee, be aware that there is a rule which specifies that a competitor may only carry 14 clubs in their golf bag. Which clubs, will depend upon how you intend to play, the course and the weather conditions.

Now you have to be able to decide which club to use and when. When trying to decide the length of the shot, you also need to be aware of the hight the ball will travel - this is called as the loft.

Most clubs are identified for ease by a number and the higher the number the shorter the distance they can hit. The clubs are made of different materials designed to get the best performance for the player. They mainly consist of a rubber grip, a shaft which usually is graphite or steel and a club head made from either steel, alloys, tungsten or sometimes a mixture of all three.

Clubs are divided into 3 different types:-

* Woods

* Irons

* Putters

THE WOODS

When golf was first played, the original players used clubs where the club head was made from wood, and this is how the name stuck. With the advent of ever changing technology club heads have changed both in shape and size and are today made from hard metals such as steel or tungsten.

* Ladies woods can be anything from 1 though 15.

* Ladies use a No.1 club or driver from the tee.

* Fairway woods are usually 3,4,5,7 and 9.

* Some shots are more challenging in terms of loft for example getting over trees with shorter distance control, and numbers 11, 13 or 15 woods can be used here.

IRONS

Sets of Irons are numbered from 1 to 9 and are usually have club heads made from metal or alloys. The higher the number on the club the less distance the ball will travel. For example a 4 iron will hit the ball further than a 7 iron.

There are also various wedges which come into this catagory, such as a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. Wedges are used to get a high degree of loft, and a sand wedge is used to escape from bunkers.

PUTTERS

Putters have very little loft and are used when the ground is smooth on the green or just on the fringe. The range of putters are infinite with various head sizes and shapes and weights, different lengths of shaft and grip. You should choose whichever produces the correct 'feel' for you.

RESCUE CLUBS OR HYBRIDS

Rescue or hybrid clubs have become very popular with lady golfers in recent years. With the characteristics of both a wood and an iron it is used mainly as a distance club and is useful when experiencing a tight lie. It is now an established tool in the range of clubs available to lady golfers.

CARE OF CLUBS

Head covers are available to protect woods from banging against other clubs in the bag and prevents damage. Make sure that your woods are dried off carefully and any grass, mud or sand is wiped off the head.

The grips, which are rubber can be washed in soap and water when they get dirty. However shinny grips are worn out and need to be replaced, this can usually be done by your club professional.

HOW TO CHOOSE CLUBS

When you choose clubs there is a vast array available to you, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable and confident with them. There are lots of different brands claiming to do everything for you, but in the end its a personal choice.

Before you buy any clubs, its sensible to find an outlet that will allow you to 'try out' different types of clubs in order to help make up your mind.

It may not follow that irons and woods from the same manufacturer suit your game. It could be prudent to buy some now and some later. Lots of players do not buy complete sets and will often add clubs at a later date.

It may not be necessary for you to buy a driver straight away, as this is a difficult club to use. Maybe buy just a 3 or 5 wood to start. It could be that to get you going, a half set of irons would be suitable, such as a 5,7,9,PW,SW. To add more in later when you know what is required is a simple matter.
